Emergency Care for Expeditions and Remote Environments – Responder
Two days/16 hours
This course covers all of the essential first aid and medical skills required by those who travel, work, and play in the
outdoors. The course is suitable for the lay person (non-medical professional) and will meet the needs of bushcraft
and outdoor instructors and group leaders, mountain guides, climbers and mountaineers, canoeists and kayakers, as
well as those who travel in remote areas by vehicle or on foot and those who just enjoy spending time in the hills and
the woods.
Course content includes:
− Approach to a critical incident and scene safety
− Assessment of the ill or injured casualty (primary and secondary survey)
− Major haemorrhage control
− Airway management, ventilation and oxygen delivery
− Adult and paediatric basic life support and AED
− Circulatory assessment, shock and concealed haemorrhage
− Neurological assessment and head injury
− Heat-related illness
− Hypothermia and cold injury
− Fracture management
− Basic wound care and burns
− Common medical emergencies
− Management of envenomation
− Communication, documentation, and hand-over to medical services
− Equipment considerations
• Designed to meet the standards set by the Institute for Outdoor Learning for outdoor first aid at band 3.
• Can be used for revalidation of first aid training in respect of NGB awards; e.g. Mountain Leader, Rock Climbing
Instructor, Canoe Leader/Instructor, Mountain Bike Leader, Cave Leader, Ski Instructor, etc.
• Suitable for school teachers and DofE leaders, etc.

One of the UKs most accomplished expedition medics, Paul began his career in the armed forces where he qualified as
a mountain leader and operated in some of the worlds most challenging environments including desert, jungle,
mountain, and arctic. Paul is a Registered Paramedic and has worked for many years as an Advanced Clinical
Practitioner in a busy NHS emergency department. He has served as solo medical provider for expeditions and trips in
Africa, South America, and across Europe. Paul holds post-graduate qualifications in emergency medicine, critical care,
pre-hospital care, travel medicine, wilderness medicine, and humanitarian medicine. He is one of only around 30 UK
clinicians and was the first UK Paramedic to achieve the Fellowship of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM).
