Winter Bushcraft Course

This Winter Bushcraft Course is based in the Arctic Circle in Northern Finland. The perfect area to really learn the skills of winter travel and bushcraft of the Boreal Forest, where temperatures routinely drop to -20, and home of the Sámi. These nomadic reindeer herders epitomise winter bushcraft, with their skills and way of life being the bases for what we call Bushcraft in the UK today.

Our Winter Bushcraft Course has been designed with this in mind. Not only will you learn how to travel and look after yourself in the Arctic, but you will also be visiting a Sámi reindeer farm to really experience what it is like to survive and thrive in these conditions. This is something we are really proud of and is truly a once in a life time experience.

Whilst on the Winter Bushcraft Course we will cover the following:

• Travel on snowshoes
• Travel on forest skis
• Ice fishing
• Hot tents and stoves
• Fire lighting on snow
• Water sourcing
• Snow shelters and quinzees
• Snow mobile travel
• Use of snow sledges for travel
• Winter survival skills
• Cold weather injuries and first aid

We will be exploring the wilderness on forest skis, ice fishing on huge lakes and learning all about what is on offer from nature to help us on our journeys, all while surrounded by the most spectacular scenery.

Our main accommodation will be 2 large cabins, plus food which is included within the course fees. We will stay out one night in a hot tent and one night in a snow shelter. We will also have the use of a private forest Laavu to use for a night out in the woodland. Don’t panic though, if you do not feel up to a night at -30 then there is always the cabins to fall back to!

We will also be spending some time out on snowmobiles to explore the area and, weather permitting, experience the beauty of the Northern Lights.

To really prepare for the Winter Bushcraft Course we will be adding in a free weekend in the woods (12th -13th October 2024) before we go. This is an opportunity to talk about the trip and run you through what equipment and clothing you will need. We are always on hand to guide you and make sure you are safe at all times.

All transfers from the Airport are included in the cost of our Winter Bushcraft Course, as is all food and specialist equipment whilst on the course. You will be provided with a comprehensive kit list before the trip.

We will all meet at Ivalo Airport in Finland. You will need to get yourself to Finland – Flights run from Heathrow and Gatwick Airport and are not included in the course cost. On average they are approximately £300. We highly recommend getting flight insurance in case of the unlikely event of course cancelation.
